The first in a series of cutting
operations performed by CUT on cracking
towers.
The Client needed to gain access to the
cyclones in the cracking tower for
substitution.
Because the internal structure was not
to be damages and the refinery was live,
CUT was contracted to provide the cold
cutting solution.
The limitations were that no material
was to enter the tower and that the
internal refractory mesh was not to be
wet as this would have damaged the
structure.
Tecnospamec engineered a solution
whereby the outer steel was cut using a
first Orbital DWCM which was water
cooled and cut the outer 32mm steel
coating reducing it down to 2mm WT.
The first machine was followed on a rail
by its twin, a second, non-water-cooled
Orbital Cutter.
The wire did not need to be cooled as it
was only cutting 2mm of steel and hardly
heats when cutting concrete or similar.
The operation was completed on schedule,
within the 24h window the Refinery had
made available.
